Macheradika
ABOUT
Cretans are experts in the art of knifemaking.
The art of knifemaking is a centuries-old tradition on the island, stemming from the necessity of liberation struggles that prompted the crafting of weapons of war.
Indeed, the Cretan knife manifests in various forms, including those crafted for prominent individuals adorned with intricate carvings on the blade, ivory handles, and elaborate silver decorations, all complemented by a silver sheath.
Chania takes pride in being the birthplace of renowned craftsmen, with the Old Town boasting a street known as Macheradika, meaning ‘the knife shops’, where the most celebrated artisans can be found.
