From Garden to Plate: The Essence of Cretan Salad
Embrace the flavours of summer with our Cretan salad, crafted from ingredients plucked fresh from the summer garden.
Ingredients:
- 3 tomatoes
- 2 cucumbers
- 1 small bunch of pursley
- 1 onion
- Olives
- Nuts
- Olive oil
- Salt
- Oregano
Procedure:
Wash the vegetables thoroughly, chop them into pieces, then transfer them to a bowl. Add the olives, crushed rusk, olive oil, oregano, and salt. Mix everything together, and your salad is good to go.
Dakos Salad
In Crete, hard rusk bread is referred to as Dakos. Dakos salad is a simple traditional dish, considered the perfect meze for tsikoudia in Crete. In the past, during winter when tomatoes weren't available, housewives would use homemade tomato paste instead.
Ingredients:
1 Dakos (rusk bread)
1 grated tomato
Olive oil
Olives
Dried oregano
Xinomizithra cheese
Procedure:
Dampen the dakos slightly, then place it on a plate. Layer the grated tomato on top of the dakos, followed by a drizzle of olive oil, crumbled xinomizithra cheese, olives, and a sprinkle of oregano. Enjoy!
