Refuge at Lakkos tou Mygerou: A Unique Spot Awaits You on Psiloritis!

Author Katerina Mylona

Adventure & Action

The refuge remains open during major events, such as the Strata of Psiloritis.

Psiloritis is a key landmark on the map of Crete that attracts countless walkers and hikers. When weather conditions allow, climbing the highest peak of Crete is an unforgettable experience.

Every year, on the last Sunday of July, the Strata of Psiloritis takes place, drawing large crowds for a hike that doubles as a pilgrimage to the chapel of Timios Stavros. Many pilgrims also ascend Psiloritis on September 13th or 14th to celebrate the feast of the chapel.

During such events, volunteers from the Hellenic Rescue Team (HRT) of Heraklion, who have been managing the refuge at Lakkos tou Mygerou since 2023, are always present to assist.

Refuge Use and Accommodation

The refuge can host up to 15 people at a time. Annually, around 60 to 70 individuals use its facilities—mostly mountaineers, scouts, and those eager to explore the area.

The volunteers not only support major events but also assist visitors in need, such as those who get lost or require help due to adverse conditions. Visitors are strongly advised to exercise caution when heading to the area.

Sustainable Development and Funding

To ensure the refuge’s sustainable development, an economic contribution system has been established, with all proceeds reinvested into maintaining and improving the facilities, as well as covering operational costs like firewood and cleaning supplies.

Discounted rates are available for groups, mountaineering clubs, scouts, sports clubs, cultural associations, and individual hikers.
