Ten years have flown by, and the people of Rethymno—of all ages—have fully embraced the spirit of the global running movement. The 10th Nikiforeios Run is back this year to prove once again the power of a tradition that has grown stronger with time.
Since 2014, this flagship race in the Rethymno regional unit has gone through different phases. Today, it’s considered a standout and highly attractive event, one that has earned its place as a major fixture not just in Crete, but across the Greek sporting landscape.
This year's 10th edition will take place on Sunday, April 13, 2025. It’s organised by the Sports Department of the Municipality of Rethymno and the Rethymno Runners' Club, with support from the Region of Crete, the Regional Unit of Rethymno, and valuable contributions from the Cultural Associations of Nikiforos Fokas and the Hellenic Mountaineering Association of Rethymno.
“This event grows more successful each year, and that’s exactly why it has taken root in people’s minds—its reach and impact go far beyond Rethymno,” says Nikos Provias, Deputy Mayor for Sports of the Municipality of Rethymno. “Since last year, we’ve not only followed the path laid by Dimitris Lachnidakis—we’re running it. And we’re thrilled to see this event evolve and expand each year, contributing to the growth of sports tourism. We don’t just care about the numbers—participation is not all about statistics. Our focus is on the quality of the event, safety, and ensuring that the very last runner of the very last race crosses the finish line with a smile. That’s when we know we’ve succeeded.”

The 10th Nikiforeios Run features a diverse and rich programme designed to cater to all needs, athletic levels, and age groups—blending sport, nature, tourism, culture, local gastronomy, entertainment, authentic Rethymnian hospitality and wellness.
The schedule includes seven different races and routes:
