The Church of the Holy Cross in Psiloritis

ABOUT

Perched at an elevation of 2,453 metres, the Chapel of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) upholds the time-honoured tradition of venerating peak sanctuaries.

This chapel operates under the jurisdiction of the Diskouri Monastery (which falls within the municipality of Mylopotamos), situated at the base of the northern slope of Mt Psiloritis. The chapel's annual celebration takes place on 14th September, drawing pilgrims from across Crete for the journey. In winter, the chapel is often concealed beneath a blanket of snow, while in the summer months, it serves as a makeshift shelter for those in need of overnight accommodation.

Around the plateau encompassing the chapel, particularly on its sheltered southern side, there is the opportunity for open-air overnight stays. However, it's essential to have suitable gear because temperatures can drop significantly during the night.
