Church of Panagia (Perachori)

ABOUT

In the 11th century, devout Christians in Anogeia built a small chapel dedicated to Saint Charalambos, the protector of animals, and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

According to surviving memoirs of the locals, the chapel was adorned with frescoes similar to those found in the ancient church of Axos in Mylopotamos.

As the area needed a larger church, and the residents were unaware of its archaeological and historical significance, the building was demolished, and in 1910, construction of the new church began, which was completed in 1925.

The church is deeply linked to tales of miracles. The faithful speak of a volunteer worker who fell into a lime kiln and emerged unscathed and a worker from Rhodes who survived a 20-meter fall without a single scratch.

The church celebrates its feast day on August 15th with a grand village festival, and it also honors Saint Charalambos.
