Church of Saint Demetrios, Anogeia
ABOUT
The Church of Saint Demetrios is located in the Metochi area of Anogeia.
It is a sacred space that the faithful built with love and patience.
Starting in 1955, with the support of the first parish committee, local residents donated their land to lay the foundations and build the walls of the church.
It is said that the bus driver traveling to Heraklion every morning used to stop at the roadside shrine of Saint John, being the first to get off the bus, venerate, and leave his offering. Passengers were inspired to follow his example, and in this way, over the years, they gathered money, supplies, olive oil, clothing, and textiles.
In 1960, faithful from all across Crete were encouraged to contribute in any way they could, and by 1968, the church’s inauguration took place.
Four years later, the founding of a separate parish for Saint Demetrios of Metochi and Saint Paraskevi of Seisarcha was officially approved.
