ABOUT
Ascending to the summit of Psiloritis, the highest peak in Crete, is a challenging and lengthy journey, best undertaken during the summer months due to harsh weather conditions. The rocky terrain demands proper gear—primarily mountaineering equipment—ample food and water supplies (as there are no water sources above 1,500 meters), and, of course, excellent physical fitness.
Several routes lead to the summit, with the most accessible being the well-marked E4 trail starting from the Nida Plateau, taking around five hours. The peak, known as Timios Stavros, offers a place for a mountaineering group to rest. Though overnight stays are tough due to the biting cold, they are typically spent inside the stone-built chapel at the summit. However, the breathtaking view from the top will undoubtedly reward your efforts.Alternatively, from the nearby village of Anogeia, a road leads to Skinakas, Zominthos, and Nida. Skinakas is another peak within the Psiloritis range, offering its own unique allure.

The tip of Local!
On the Nida Plateau, at an altitude of 1,450 meters, you’ll find scattered mitata—stone-domed shepherd's huts and dairies that will impress you with their clever construction.
