Explor.gr: Summiting the Highest Peak of Crete

With explor.gr as your guide, the approximate duration of the journey from Heraklion to Lakkos Mygerou (or Migerou) is approximately an hour and a half.

The hiking adventure commences from the northern side of the mountain in the scenic area known as Livadiotiko Aori. The designated trail for this expedition is called Strata of Psiloritis.

The starting point for your hike is the enchanting plateau known as Lakkos Mygerou (altitude 1,580 m). From here, your journey will take you upwards, climbing towards the majestic summit of Mt Psiloritis. The pinnacle, known as Timios Stavros, awaits you at the mountain's highest point, reaching an impressive altitude of 2,456 metres.

At the summit, you'll discover a humble small church constructed entirely from natural mountain stones, skilfully stacked without any binder to hold them together. This construction technique mirrors the traditional methods employed by local shepherds for centuries in creating stone structures known as ‘mitata’ (meaning ‘shelters’ in the Cretan dialect).
