Yiannis’ Taverna: A traditional candlelit meal
ABOUT
In the picturesque village of Kyparissi, surrounded by lush vineyards and olive groves just outside Heraklion, you’ll find Yiannis’ taverna, run by him and his wife.
There’s no sign to guide you, and electricity is used only for essentials. The primary source of light is candles, casting a magical glow over the old 1907 building, which once belonged to Yiannis’ grandfather.
The space is adorned with wooden barrels of homemade wine, and the background music perfectly complements the rustic vibe. As you enter, you’re greeted by the tantalizing aromas of the food. Thick-cut fries fried in olive oil, sizzling snails (chochlioi boubouristoi), roasted pork, and slow-cooked beef are some of the must-try dishes.
There’s no menu here. Each day, Yiannis creates a unique selection, and the price is a flat €20 per person, including drinks.
In the summer, the taverna relocates to the nearby Agron Theatre, a private open-air venue that also hosts performances, offering a dining experience under the stars.
The tip of Local!
To reach Kyparissi safely and without delays, follow the route: Heraklion – Malades – Prophet Elias – Kyparissi. Avoid taking the route via Heraklion – Dafnes – Kyparissi. After Dafnes, the road becomes a dirt track and is uncharted. Especially in rainy weather, you are almost guaranteed to get stuck in the mud.
