Sarakina Gorge in Meskla: A Hidden Gem Enchanting Hikers
ABOUT
There are two Sarakina Gorges, one in Chania and one in Ierapetra of Lassithi. The one in Mythi, Ierapetra is bigger and better known.
The gorge's entrance lies outside Meskla along the road to Zourva.
The Sarakina Gorge is veiled by cypress and plane trees, making it difficult to spot at first glance. However, those fortunate enough to venture through it are captivated by its lush green scenery and mesmerising natural formations.
The circular crossing of the gorge takes approximately an hour to complete. The hike along the newly formed path, next to the riverbed, is exceptionally awe-inspiring, thanks to the ever-changing landscape. At one particular point, there is a small passage, giving the impression that the limestone rocks have been torn in half, adding to the breath-taking experience.
