Olive Tree & Olive Oil Museum of Vatolakkos
ABOUT
The Olive Tree and Olive Oil Museum is housed in the "fabrika", an 18th-century building. As the only surviving pre-industrial building in the regional unit of Chania, the fabriki has been declared a protected monument by the 13th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture.
Visitors can explore the Dermitzakis Folklore Collection, which features over 100 vintage objects. These are displayed inside the museum according to their original function. Most of them are tools used in olive oil production, in essential agricultural tasks such as threshing, and in everyday household duties like kneading and baking bread.
The museum’s courtyard also features an old stone oven, completing the picture—after all, it was a slice of warm bread dipped in fresh oil that was traditionally used to test the oil’s quality.
