The Tower of Voukoliés

Today, you’ll find only a part of the fortress.
It was in 1897 when a heroic battle took place at the Tower southwest of the village. Greek Colonel Timoleon Vassos, who had landed on the island with an expeditionary force of 1,416 men, along with the support of local chieftains and warriors, defeated the Ottoman defenders of the Tower and captured it.
In fact, the Tower was destroyed so that it could not be used again by the Ottomans.
At the site, a replica of the tower has been built, where every year, on the anniversary of the battle, a commemorative event is held by the Municipality of Platanias.
