Peristera Cave

ABOUT

Peristera Cave is located 2.3 km east of Karidi, Sitia, and about 300 m north of the main road at Kato Plativolo or Peristeras. Its entrance sits at 540 m, with the edge of the sinkhole reaching 565 m. Neolithic settlement traces were found here.

The cave has rich limestone formations and an explored passage length of 170 m. It formed as a large sinkhole after part of the roof collapsed, creating a 48x26 m depression, 17-25 m deep. At its lowest point, it's 63 m below the entrance. Inside, ancient ash remains and a human skeleton were discovered.

During the Ottoman period, it served as a refuge for locals. Water drips in many spots, and humidity ranges from 85% to 99%.
