Mikro and Megalo Katofygi Caves

ABOUT

After a 45-minute uphill hike to the northwest of the village Tourtouli (now Agios Georgios) in Sitia, we finally arrive at the cave.

Situated at an altitude of 450 metres, this location boasts remarkable features and holds great potential for exploration and development.

A short distance from Megalo Katofygi is Mikro Katofygi, a cave of significant scientific importance. At its entrance, there is a small chamber, and to the left, there is a 40-metre-long downhill gallery featuring water basins, breath-taking columns, and richly adorned walls. Towards the back of the cave, there is a narrow crack, and a steep descent of 6-7 metres potentially leads to another chamber. Notably, bones of humans and other mammals were discovered within the cave, adding to its scientific significance.
