Apoloustres Cave

Caves

ABOUT

North of Makry Gialos, within the territory of the village of Pefki, there are two remarkable cave formations with beautiful natural decoration. One is Apaloustres Cave, which is relatively easy to access, and the other is Latsida Vreikou Cave.

Following a dirt road, you climb up to Apaloustres Cave (610m), where a flashlight is necessary for exploration.

The cave features a large chamber (60×15) and thanks to its completely hidden entrance, it once served as the safest refuge for surrounding villages during times of raids, pirate attacks, and persecution.

Back in 1930, visitors discovered bronze coins inside the cave, reportedly bearing the head of a man and the inscription “Marcus Aurelius” written in a circular pattern around it.
