Toplou Monastery Gorge

ABOUT

The entrance is situated 200 metres to the west of the Toplou Monastery. The landscape is truly remarkable, featuring a diverse flora, including a group of Theophrastus' palm trees (Phoenix theophrasti), groves of carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua), oleanders (Nerium oleander), mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus), and wild olive trees (Olea europea ssp silvestris).

The area also captivates with its fauna. Thanks to the presence of water in various spots, you'll have the opportunity to observe the Caspian turtle (Mauremys caspica) in the puddles that form within the gorge throughout the year.

The geological formations in the gorge are especially intriguing, characterised by steep rock faces, awe-inspiring caves, and distinctive eroded structures known as ‘Tafoni’ in Greek.
