Gra Lygia: The Tomato War and the Greenhouse Pioneer
ABOUT
Some conflicts have no casualties, culprits, or losers – only winners.
That's the essence of the Tomato War, a local tradition in Gra Lygia, a coastal village near Ierapetra.
If you wish to join the fray, make your way to the village in June!
In 1966, Gra Lygia witnessed the pioneering cultivation of vegetables under glass, marking the inception of increased early vegetable production and a significant income source for numerous residents. The widespread adoption of greenhouses in the adjacent region subsequently solidified Ierapetra as a key hub for early vegetable cultivation.
The use of greenhouses was initiated by the young Dutchman Paul Kuijpers, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 1971. In recognition of his significant contribution, the local community erected a statue at the village's entrance in his honour.
