Chrissi Island

ABOUT

The island of Chrissi, also known as Gaidouronisi, is situated 8 miles south of Ierapetra. Chrissi is encircled by beaches with golden sand and resembles an exotic destination due to its turquoise waters.

It is an island of extraordinary natural beauty, featuring the largest naturally formed juniper forest. Most of the junipers are around 200 years old and can grow up to 7 metres in height.

Chrissi got its name from its golden sand, which has acquired this unique colour due to the accumulation of countless seashell fragments.

The island can be reached by boat from Ierapetra; however, access to the area is strictly regulated to preserve its beauty and natural environment, making visits conditional. Overnight stays, camping, entry into the juniper forest, and shell collection are all prohibited.

Gerapetrites (locals) love this island and call it simply “Island”.
