El Greco Museum
ABOUT
It is one of the most popular museums in Crete. The building housing the museum is believed to have been the home of the painter (1541-1614). According to the painter’s own testimony, he was born 25 kilometres northwest of Heraklion next to a Byzantine church.
The museum is housed in a restored stone building belonging to a Post-Byzantine residential complex and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. It has been rebuilt so as to resemble its original design and has been a museum since 1998. It houses an exhibition of 24 slides of Theotokopoulos' works.
In the courtyard of the Museum there is a small cafe, where the visitor can relax under the shade of the centuries-old trees. Finally, just before the entrance to the museum, there is a stone well with a water pumping mechanism which was part of the original Post-Byzantine farmhouse.
