ABOUT
On its eastern side lies the largest forest of wild olive trees (Phillirea Media) in all of Crete. Along the way, you’ll encounter plane trees, kermes oaks, mastic bushes, carob trees, and wild olives.
The first church you come across is dedicated to Agia Paraskevi. This small, single-aisled, vaulted church, with a slightly pointed arch, dates back to the late 14th century AD. Tombs filled with bones were discovered along the northern wall of the church.
About 130 meters further, you’ll find the second church, dedicated to Agia Marina and Agios Antonios.
As you venture deeper into the gorge, the landscape becomes increasingly lush, with trees lining the path. The gorge’s hidden surprise is its very own stream.
Initially dry near the chapels, after about 15 minutes of walking, water begins to flow in the riverbed, forming a small stream by the midpoint of the gorge.
