Arkalospilio Cave

ABOUT

In the beautiful village of Marathos, the Arkalospilio cave can be found at an altitude of 545 metres, just beyond the large abandoned quarry in Arkalokefalo.

The Arkalospilio cave, still largely unexplored, is believed to extend over a significant portion of the mountain. Its corridors span a length of 153 metres, featuring four spacious halls and two smaller ones adorned with stunning decorations. The cave is dynamically alive, with notable drip flow. Archaeological findings within the cave include Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval artefacts, affirming its historical use as a place of worship in ancient times. Additionally, during the period of Ottoman rule, the cave provided refuge for Christians seeking safety and protection.
