ABOUT
Matala, where our journey commences, is situated at the mouth of a small valley, bounded to the north by the hill Nisos and to the south by the hill Kastri, offering delightful vistas of the Paximadia islands.
Facing the bay lies a splendid sandy beach, stretching 300 metres in length, adorned with fine gravel and boasting deep, crystal-clear waters.
Moving east, we walk alongside the caves where a handful of hippies still reside in the area. With the stunning sea on our right, offering a breath-taking view, we tread along an unmarked path. Our journey takes us first to the picturesque Kokkini Ammos Beach (Red Sand Beach), and then we continue through a sequence of small fjords until we arrive at Vathy Beach.
This beach is nestled at the terminus of a narrow gorge.
Exiting the narrow gorge and passing by the houses, we ascend along the unpaved road towards Mt Kefali at Cape Lithino.
From Kefali, standing at an altitude of 388 metres, begin nearly sheer cliffs that descend dramatically into the sea, leaving spectators in awe.
