Kamaraic Cave or Cave of Kamares
ABOUT
Located in the western mountain range of Psiloritis at an altitude of 1700 metres, you can find the cave called ‘Kamaraic’.
To reach the Kamaraic cave, one needs to embark on a three-hour hike starting from the community of Kamares.
The entrance of the cave, resembling an arch, provides access to the main area through a steep downhill slope. This section of the cave showcases remarkable stone decoration, adding to its allure and visual appeal.
The initial excavations of the cave were conducted by Taramelli in 1894, followed by the British School in 1912. These archaeological investigations unveiled artefacts and remains from the Early, Middle, and Late Minoan periods.
A notable feature of the cave is the presence of Kamaraic vases, which are known for their distinct texture and decoration. These vases played a significant role in the development of the Kamaraic style, which originated from this region.
