Vori: A Captivating Village with a Millennia-Long History
ABOUT
The place is perfect for visitors who love tradition and culture.
Vori is situated in the plain of Messara, at an altitude of 60 metres, just 2-3 km north of the archaeological site of Phaistos.
The Museum of Cretan Ethnology is worth a visit and the village cathedral is devoted to The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It is speculated that Vori derived its name from Voros, the son of Rhadamanthys, who was the king of Phaistos.
A short distance north of the village, you can find the abandoned Monastery of Panagia Kardiotissa, which was once a dependency of the Varsamonero Monastery. The only remaining structure is the recorded church, which is notable for its remarkable frescoes influenced by Western style.
In 1978, Vori was officially designated as a protected area by the Ministry of Culture.
