The Church of Panagia Throniotissa (Thronos)

ABOUT

The village of Thronos, situated on the site of ancient Syvritos, is believed to have taken its name from the bishopric seat established here during the early Christian centuries.

At the heart of Thronos, remnants of an early Christian basilica were documented by the historian Gerola and other researchers. In 1983, a partial excavation revealed more insights into this ancient basilica, adding to the village's historical allure.

The church of Panagia Throniotissa is distinguished by a high-pointed, late-Gothic doorway on its western side, adorned with the Kallergis family crest. Inside, extensive frescoes cover the walls, created by two 14th-century painters. The first artist reflects the folk and conservative art trends of the 13th century, while the second introduces more refined, academic elements of the Palaiologan art style. Along the side walls, standing figures of saints are depicted, with a particularly striking image of the enthroned Virgin Mary holding the Child standing out among them.
