Opsigias: At the Foot of Mount Samitos

ABOUT

The charming village of Opsigias is nestled on the northern slopes of Mount Samitos, about 1 km east of Neos Amari. This lush, green village preserves remarkable examples of traditional Cretan architecture.

Take a leisurely walk among old stone-built houses and visit the village’s traditional fountain. Here, you'll find the parish church of Saint Nicholas, while on the northern outskirts stands the late-Byzantine church of Saint George, which still preserves its beautiful frescoes.

For hiking enthusiasts, a stunning trail begins in the village, leading to the church of the Ascension of Christ at the summit of Mount Samitos. From there, you can take in breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Amari Valley.

Opsigias comes alive every year on January 17, celebrating Saint Anthony’s Feast Day, while its patron saint is Saint Nicholas.
