Genna: The Village of the Monumental Olive Tree
ABOUT
The village of Genna, in the municipality of Amari, is known for its abundant local produce. Here, you’ll find exceptional olive oil, citrus fruits, walnuts, cherries, apples, pears, pomegranates, quinces, almonds, figs, vegetables, dried beans, and corn—all thriving in this fertile land.
Near the village, archaeologists have discovered a chamber tomb from the Late Minoan period. According to local tradition, Genna was once an entirely Muslim village during the years of Ottoman rule. Some even say that the Church of Saint Nicholas, built in 1922, was originally a mosque.
In the heart of the village, a natural spring with fresh drinking water flows, while towering plane trees provide the perfect shade for a coffee break or a picnic by the source of the Ligiotis River.
Just north, less than 1 kilometre from the village, you’ll find the small cemetery church of Saint Onoufrios, well worth a visit.
But the true marvel of Genna lies just south of the village: the famous monumental olive tree, standing for over 2,000 years. A living testament to Crete’s deep-rooted history, this ancient tree is a sight to behold.
