Sata: A Handful of Homes in the Amari Valley

Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Only a few houses remain in this tiny village, but it’s well worth the detour. Set in a stunning landscape of olive trees, at the southern foothills of Mount Psiloritis, Sata offers a rare kind of quiet charm.

Human presence in the area dates back to early antiquity, with Minoan tombs and the remains of a Roman settlement discovered nearby. The village itself is first recorded in Venetian documents from the 16th century, and has been continuously inhabited ever since.

Today, visitors can see the ruins of a Late Byzantine church dedicated to Agia Pelagia, which was converted into a Muslim mosque during the Ottoman period. Just a little further north, on a small hill, lie the remnants of Agia Fotini’s church, still standing in partial ruin.
