Pelekita Cave
ABOUT
It is the deepest cave in Crete and one of the most renowned in Sitia.
It is located in Pelekita or Sykia near Kato Zakros.
The entrance of this cave is marked by the presence of a majestic fig tree, hence its alternative name, the 'Cave of the Fig Tree'.
However, its true origin can be traced back to the surrounding area, which was historically used for stone mining.
The entrance of this cave leaves a striking impression, and access is gained through a chamber with a steep downward slope. Beyond its captivating aesthetics and abundant decorations, it holds great archaeological significance as one of the most important caves in the region. Traces of Neolithic habitation have been discovered within its depths, adding to its historical value.
The Cave of Pelekita is 310 metres long.
