Honos: The Village That Served as a Refuge
ABOUT
On the road to the village of Aimonas in the regional unit of Rethymno, 55 kilometers from the city of Rethymno, lies the settlement of Honos in Mylopotamos. Honos Mylopotamou is close to its namesake historic cave, which was often used by locals as a refuge during the Cretan uprisings against the Ottoman rule.
According to Wikipedia, the landscape around the village was shaped by the karst weathering of the Psiloritis limestone. To the south of the village, this process has created a plateau drained by two natural dolines, or sinkholes. Further south, in the area known as Kourtsa, karst erosion has sculpted natural rock formations with sharp, jagged edges. Kourtsa is the largest area of this kind in Crete, showcasing the dramatic artistry of nature.
