Monastery of Diskouri
ABOUT
The Monastery of Diskouri is located near the village of Livadia in the Mylopotamos area. Though it hasn’t been proven, it is believed to have been built over a shrine to the Dioskouroi twins, from whom it takes its name. Its foundation dates back to the Venetian period.
Originally constructed with a fortified character, the monastery lost much of its defensive appearance after several reconstructions in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the center of the complex lies the main church, or katholikon, dedicated to Saint George. Surrounding the church are the monastic quarters, including the monks' cells, the abbot’s quarters, the dining hall, and various functional spaces like an olive press, workshops, a wine press, and storage areas.
Nearby, southwest of the monastery, stands the Church of Saint John the Baptist, which once served as a chapel to the monastery. Also under the monastery's care is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, located at the highest peak of Crete, Mount Psiloritis, at an impressive altitude of 2,456 meters.

The tip of Local!
One particularly intriguing tradition, a vestige from antiquity, is still observed at the Monastery of Diskouri. Shepherds accused of livestock theft make a solemn oath before the icon of Saint George, invoking Zeus himself: "Ni Za, I swear and let it be known that I did not harm your livestock by my hand or intention."
