Holy Monastery of Vosakos
ABOUT
The building complex comprises structures from various time periods and is organised across three levels.
The main church, also known as the Major Temple, is a small, single-aisled structure that was constructed in the late 19th century. It stands on the site where a frescoed church from the 14th-15th century once stood. In 1669, a pillar was built, and in 1673, an impressive fountain was erected to the west of the main church.
During the 1821 revolution, the monastery was set ablaze by the Turks, resulting in the destruction of the main church, along with the other buildings, the library, and the archive. Tragically, 18 out of the 20 monks were executed.
In 1935, the Vosakos Monastery was officially recognised as a listed monument, but unfortunately, it started to decline two decades later. However, in 1998, restoration efforts were undertaken, leading to its successful revival and reopening.
