Chamalevri of Rethymno: A Historic Village with a Modest Footprint
ABOUT
As early as 1577, the village was referred to by the name Chamalevri, indicating its long-standing history as a very small settlement.
The Mediterranean settlements of Asteri and Chamalevri, along with the coastal settlement of Stavromenos, form an expansive archaeological site, accessible after descending approximately 1.5 kilometres.
On Kakavella Hill, situated between Chamalevri and Stavromenos, archaeologists have unearthed ruins of a Minoan settlement. About 500 metres northwest of the village, and southwest of Kakavella, lies Manouses, where ruins of both Minoan and classical settlements have been discovered. This location yielded a significant number of lamps, suggesting it may have served as a sanctuary during the Late Minoan III period.
On the neighbouring hill of Chatzametis, another settlement dating back to Minoan and ancient times has been discovered, extending northward towards the Blani (or Bolani) and Tsikourgiana sites.
