The School Museum is organising its third excursion to introduce visitors to the villages of the former Municipality of Arkadi. Previous excursions were held in Amnato-Kapsaliana-Pikris in 2019 and in Kyrianna in 2024. This year’s destinations will be Pangalohori, Asteri, Chamalevri and Stavromenos.
The participants will start their day at Arsaniou Monastery, an important religious and educational centre during the 19th century, where they will be guided by the abbot Efraim Manousakis.
Next, they will stop for a tour at the old Pangalohori school building, now an Information Centre for the Sea Turtle Protection Society, and the nearby Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, built shortly before the Cretan Revolution of 1866.

The next stop will be at the Sikh Temple, where a representative of the community will guide them.
The excursion continues with a visit to the folklore collection of the "House of Poliou" in Asteri and the Fryktoria Tower in Chamalevri.
At the old Chamalevri School – now the local community’s headquarters – there will be a detailed presentation about the sites participants will visit, as well as those they won't have time to explore.
Nearby, at the headquarters of the Stavromenos Cultural Association, there will be a briefing on the association’s vibrant activities, including its theatre group, choir, and book club.
The tour will then continue to the archaeological site at Manouses, where two adjoining Roman-era structures have been excavated. One contains a fully preserved olive press installation and the other a ceramic kiln.
Following that, participants will head to the Stavromenos Multipurpose Centre for an informational stop and reception. Here, they will learn about the local school complexes (nursery, elementary, junior high and high school) and the activities of the School Museum.
The next tour stop will be at the Roman Baths at Tsikouriana, the stone quarry there, and the cave-church of Zoodochos Pigi.
There will also be a stop at the Monument to Fallen Greeks and Australians, and to wrap up the day, a leisurely walk along the coastal archaeological park of Stavromenos is planned.
The excursion, taking place on Sunday, May 11, 2025, is supported by the local communities of Pangalohori and Chamalevri, with their presidents Markos Drygiannakis and Dimitris Serlis, and by the Stavromenos Cultural Association with its president Evangelia Tsiompika.
The organisers from the School Museum are kindergarten teacher Giouli Zacharioudaki, curator Haris Stratidakis, and educational programs coordinator Giorgos Kanakakis.
Participation in the educational excursion is free of charge.
