Chalevi Monastery
ABOUT
One of the many monasteries that existed during the 16th and 17th centuries in the wider area of Rethymno is the Chalevi Monastery.
You will find it on the road towards Roussospiti and Chromonastiri.
The monastery remained active during the Ottoman period. For a long time, it was even a Stauropegic monastery.
In 1900, it was dissolved and became a dependency of Arsaniou Monastery, and in 1991, it was annexed to the Monastery of Agia Irini.
Today, only the beautiful single-nave church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary survives, with the date 1864 carved above the entrance.
Around the church, only ruins remain, indicating the existence of a fortified complex and revealing elements of folk Cretan architecture from past centuries.
