Wood Art: The craft of woodturning comes to life at Nikos Siragas' gallery
ABOUT
At Nikos Siragas' gallery in Rethymno, the traditional art of woodturning remains alive thanks to the dedication and persistence of the artist.
Woodturning requires the hand, mind, and heart of its creator. Nikos Siragas has been practicing woodturning for 40 years as a self-taught artist and is the only Greek known internationally for this art. He participates in workshops and exhibitions to teach his technique, which combines turning with sculpting.
Inspired by the sea and the natural landscape, he creates unique decorative pieces using local woods such as olive, carob, eucalyptus, mulberry, and more.
In addition to his works, visitors can attend woodturning workshops and acquire his book to learn more.
He also takes on commissions to create pieces for collectors. One of these is the famous "spanthoverga," a weapon used during the Turkish occupation.
