The Majestic Loggia in Rethymno
ABOUT
The Loggia stands as the city's most captivating Venetian monument. Erected in the mid-16th century, it has been exceptionally well-preserved. This public building served as a gathering place for the city's elites, where they deliberated on various political, economic, and commercial matters of the era. Following Rethymno's occupation by the Turks, it was repurposed as a mosque. Today, the Loggia is home to the Municipal Library, having previously housed the Archaeological Museum.
The Loggia of Rethymno was constructed in accordance with the standards of the Loggias in Venice and Heraklion, but it didn't match their grandeur.
Nowadays, the building houses a store that sells authentic museum replicas.
