Historic Fortezza: A Journey Through Time

ABOUT

A hallmark of Rethymno and one of the island's most significant landmarks, the Fortezza is positioned to the north of the city. It presides over the Paleokastro hill, contributing to the captivating allure that Rethymno holds for its visitors. This historical site served as the administrative and religious hub of Rethymno, housing the Palazzo Pubblico, the official residence of the city's governor at the time. Additionally, within the castle's confines, you can find the episcopal palace and the Cathedral of St Nicholas.

The vista from above, looking down upon the Venetian harbour, is truly exceptional. Access to the Fortezza can be gained through the primary gate, which leads through an arcade. On the eastern side, just beyond the fortress's boundaries, you'll find the pentagonal fortress, which once safeguarded the main entrance to the Fortezza during the Turkish occupation. Today, it serves as the location of the city's Archaeological Museum.
