Cave of Pan

ABOUT

Not far from the Platania Gorge, to the east, lies the Cave of Pan, a place steeped in myth and history. According to local legend, this is where the ancient god Pan was born—the protector of shepherds and livestock, a role of great significance in Crete’s past and present.

Inside the cave, rock carvings dating back to the Minoan period suggest that the site had religious importance even in ancient times. The presence of such engravings further highlights its role as a place of worship, adding to its mystery and allure.
