Ancient Syvritos
ABOUT
To the west of the village of Thronos, on Kefalas Hill, the ancient city of Syvritos thrived in antiquity. Thanks to its strategically advantageous and naturally fortified location, it held dominion over the transportation routes connecting the northern and southern regions of the Rethymno area.
It was constructed on multiple terraces, owing to the sloping terrain, and its territory encompassed the present-day municipalities of Amari and Agios Vasilios. Its harbour was ancient Soulia, situated at the location of today's Agia Galini on the shores of the Libyan Sea.
Syvritos persisted through the second Byzantine era and endured into the initial years of Venetian governance. Discoveries from excavations in the region are currently showcased at the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.
Distinguishing features include its silver coins, which attest to its influence during the Roman era when it enjoyed the status of an autonomous city.
