The Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is an alien and invasive species originating from eastern North America and Mexico. It has been introduced in Greece and is currently residing in Lake Agyia in Chania.
It lacks protection under Greek law and represents a threat to the fauna of Crete. Specifically, in Lake Agyia, it poses a threat to the local populations of the endemic frog of Crete (Pelophylax cretensis).
How can you distinguish it? This frog is characterised by a robust build and a large head. Adult individuals can achieve a body length of up to 20 centimetres. The back exhibits colours ranging from olive green and brown to occasional black, adorned with dark spots or markings. The underside is whitish with few dark specks. A notable feature is the large tympanic membrane, equal to or larger than the diameter of the eye.
