Situated south of the Omalos Plateau, the entrance to this remarkable natural wonder can be found at Xyloskalo. The entire trail covers a distance of 12.5 kilometres, while the route up to Agia Roumeli totals 16 kilometres.
Throughout the journey, hikers will find built-in fountains providing access to drinking water, ensuring their hydration along the way. Additionally, designated rest areas with toilets offer opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.
When embarking on the hike through the Samaria Gorge, it is essential to consider a few tips. Firstly, opt for light and comfortable clothing suitable for the weather conditions. It is also important to carry an ample supply of water and snacks
The Samaria Gorge is open for visitors to explore its entirety from 1st May until the end of October, taking advantage of favourable weather conditions during that period. However, it's important to note that after 7 pm, all visitors must have exited the gorge, as overnight stays are strictly prohibited.

From Agia Roumeli, a coastal village situated at the end of the gorge, tourists have the option to board a boat that departs for Chora Sfakion. From there, they can then take a bus back to Chania, completing the return journey.
