Gavalianos Kafenes: From Austria to Gavalochori, with Love!
ABOUT
In the heart of the charming village of Gavalochori, in the Apokoronas region, you’ll find Gavalianos Kafenes, affectionately called "Monica’s Taverna" by locals.
Originally a traditional coffeehouse, the space still exudes a nostalgic charm. Since 1994, it has been run by Monica van den Bosch, who brought her Austrian roots to Crete and made it her home.
The menu is a delight for food lovers, featuring lamb baked in a gastra, bekri meze (a hearty meat dish), imam bayildi, and of course, the iconic Cretan dakos.
The kafenes is open from the morning, serving coffee and even cocktails, making it an inviting spot any time of the day.
The surrounding villages are perfect for exploration, and Gavalochori itself is a starting point for several hiking trails.
