Vamos Village: Taste honey straight from the hive, make tyrozouli and enjoy traditional pilaf!

Starting from Vamos, you’ll embark on a unique adventure that begins with a live demonstration of honey harvesting. The journey starts at the nearby village of Emprosnero, where you’ll meet Mr. Stavros, a local beekeeper. After putting on the protective suits, you’ll get to watch as he opens the hives, showing you the bees at work, including the queen bee, while he shares the secrets of beekeeping. At the end, enjoy fresh honey paired with local cheese and a shot of raki!

Next, you’ll visit the grazing fields of Giorgis, where you’ll see him milking sheep with his loyal dog by his side and making “tyrozouli,” a traditional soft cheese. Meanwhile, the aromatic lamb broth will be cooking, ready for you to enjoy with traditional Cretan pilaf!

Your guide, Mr. Giorgos Hatzidakis, is a Vamos native who knows the history, culture, and customs of the area better than anyone.

The tour begins at 2:00 p.m. from the tourist office in the village, daily except Sunday, by reservation.
