The Historic Kryonerida Cave
ABOUT
Situated in the scenic ravine of Lagos, southwest of the village of Vafes and at an elevation of 230 metres, lies the cave of Kryonerida. While the cave may not possess significant spelaeological attributes, its historical significance is immense. It was within these cavernous depths that a tragic loss of life occurred in 1821, as the inhabitants of the village of Vafes met their unfortunate fate.
The entrance of the cave measures 1.8 metres in width and 1.5 metres in height. It comprises a series of four chambers, with the first chamber being larger in size. Within the second chamber, the bones of the victims of the Turkish atrocity can be found, serving as a haunting reminder of the tragic events that unfolded. The final chamber houses a spring, from which the cave derived its name.
