Cave Abyss of Gourgouthakas
ABOUT
The 'Gourgouthakas 2022' expedition was initiated by the Greek Spelaeological Community with the support of all spelaeological associations in Greece.
Gourgouthakas is situated in the Atzines or Atzinolakas area, on the north side of the White Mountains in the regional unit of Chania, Crete, approximately 2 kilometres east of the peak of Agio Pnevma (2262 m). The entrance is at an altitude of 1550 metres, and the broader area falls within the jurisdiction of the community of Pemonia with access from the community of Melidoni. Both communities are part of the Municipal Unit of Fres in the Municipality of Apokoronas.
The broader area of Atzinolakas holds significant spelaeological interest, featuring not only Gourgouthakas but also numerous other caves.
