Sternes: A Village of Warm Hospitality and Hidden Charms
ABOUT
One notable feature of Sternes is a large cistern, believed to date back to the Roman era, located on the western side of the settlement. This cistern has lent its name to Sternes in Monofatsi, as it collects water from a nearby stream.
Today, Sternes continues to charm visitors with its warm and welcoming locals. The village comes alive during various festivities, including celebrations on 21st November, May Day, and in June for the feast of St John Klidonos.
Perched atop a hill at the foot of Asterousia, Sternes boasts several important churches, including the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary within the village itself. Additionally, Agios Ioannis features remnants of frescoes in its cemetery, while frescoes adorn the chapels of Agia Paraskevi and Panagia.
