Labyrinth Cave

ABOUT

The Labyrinth holds significant importance as one of the prominent caves within the region of Heraklion.

It is an artificial cave that used to be a quarry of ancient Gortys.

The Labyrinth Cave, located on the southern side of the hill, is composed of a series of man-made tunnels that form an intricate network of pathways spanning a total length of 2,500 metres. Within the galleries, one can find numerous chambers adorned with massive walls and columns. Many of these rooms bear evidence of travellers and visitors dating back to the 15th century AD. The presence of scattered fragments of Roman pottery and lamps further confirms that the cave has been in use since ancient times.
