Pano Zakros: A Village Nestled Among Olive Trees

Pano Zakros is a picturesque, rural village surrounded by lush olive groves, offering visitors a glimpse of traditional Cretan life. It is the main village (a “kephalochori”) of the Zakros community in the municipality of Sitia, located in a verdant setting that radiates tranquility.
The famous Gorge of the Dead, named after the numerous Minoan tombs found in caves along its walls, runs through both parts of the ancient city, adding a layer of historical mystique to the area.
Located 38 kilometers from Sitia, Pano Zakros is accessible via a scenic road that passes through the village of Palekastro before heading south.
While in Pano Zakros, you can visit the beautiful churches of Agios Georgios, the Presentation of Christ (Ypapanti), and the Church of the Cross (Stavros), each offering a peaceful stop amidst the green landscape.
